Public Sector

In recent times York and North Yorkshire have become an integral part of the central government machine, with an increasing number of departments and staff relocating to the area. Public Sector employment in York and North Yorkshire accounted for 28.8% of the counties total employment in 2004, with nearly 94,500 people working in just under 3,000 organisations (www.ynypu.org.uk).

Research shows that the strength and appeal of the area is down to a high quality of life, education, housing and healthcare, low crime rate, great transport communications and strategic geographical position (half way up the UK). All of these contribute to a common feeling among many new residents that their move to North Yorkshire has had a substantial positive impact on the quality of life they experience.

York and North Yorkshire's prestige as a Public Sector location has been led by the many significant Public Sector organisations that are located here. Such as;

DEFRA:  The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has several offices in York, employing over 750 people.  These include the Pesticide Safety Directorate, the Meat Hygiene Service and other core DEFRA divisions.

Central Science Laboratory: Established in 1992 CSL now employs over 700 people of whom 500 are scientists.

Catterick Garrison: This is the UK's largest army base with  over 7,500 regular soldiers, 1,900 recruits and 2,000 civillian contract staff.
