  • Askham Bryan College

    The college provides full-time, part-time and short courses, as well as work-based learning programmes for the land-based and related industries. Courses are offered from foundation to advanced level in a range of subjects including agriculture, animal management, business, countryside management, design, engineering, floristry, forestry, equine management and horticulture. The college is also a recognised Centre of Vocational Excellence in Food Chain Technology.

    York is a major centre for Defra, The Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs. The Headquarters of the Pesticide Safety Directorate, the Plant Health Division, and the Farming Statistics Branch are based on the banks of the River Foss in the city centre. Defra as sponsor department for the Food and Drink Industry works closely with individual sectors and key businesses to foster and promote greater competitiveness and to remove obstacles to growth.

  • Food Standards Agency (FSA)

    The Meat Hygiene Service, an Executive Agency of the FSA, has its headquarters in York. The MHS is responsible for the protection of public health and animal welfare at slaughter in approved meat establishments in Great Britain - these include slaughterhouses and meat cutting premises. MHS staff can take enforcement action against food business operators, in accordance with the relevant legislation.
